About/History
The Land Park Harlequins girls rugby team was founded in 2015 when Olivia Popp, who had played two consecutive years for the boys Motley team decided Land Park needed a girls team. With the help of her family and coaches, she founded the first middle school and high school girls rugby team in Land Park. Prior to starting the Harlequins, Olivia had successfully fought USA Rugby to allow middle school girls to play with middle school boys. We are the sister club of the Land Park Motley and the CK McClatchy Lions Rugby Club. In 2020, the three clubs united to form the Sacramento Rugby Union.
We are a recreational team that also operates as a travel/club squad for those who want to compete at a higher level. We have travelled to Oregon, Southern California, Nevada, Indiana, Washington and Utah. When we travel, we are playing the best teams in the nation and abroad, we have been ranked as high as 4th in the United States. The team boasts 6 High School All-Americans and 2 Youth Olympic Games Qualifier participants. We have alumni who have gone on to play and study at USMA West Point, Harvard University, Bowdoin College, Brown University, Central Washington University, University of California, Berkeley and University of California, San Diego.
